what sleuth is

sleuth estimates the location where a photograph was likely taken, using GPS metadata embedded in the file when present, or a machine-vision estimate when it is not. The service is provided "as is" and for informational purposes only.

estimates are estimates

Without embedded GPS, our output is a probabilistic guess — a region, a country, occasionally a city. It is frequently wrong at street level and sometimes wrong about the country. Do not rely on it for anything that matters: legal, financial, or personal-safety decisions.

your use

You agree to use sleuth only with images you have the right to analyze — your own photos, or images whose provenance you are authorized to verify. You agree not to use it to locate, surveil, or otherwise identify any person without their consent.

no warranty

The service is provided without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for purpose, or non-infringement. We are not liable for any decision made on the basis of an estimate.

third-party services

Mapping tiles are served by OpenStreetMap; reverse geocoding by Nominatim; the vision pass by a model on our edge. Each has its own terms, and their availability is outside our control.

changes

We may revise these terms at any time. Continued use after a revision means you accept it.
